I started my journey into the world of purebred dogs, showing, breeding and then judging in 1968 while still in high school. For my 16th birthday I was given a registered Irish Setter and the breeder told me I should show it. I asked, “to who?” And then she told me about dog shows. From there I purchased a female Irish and she was my first champion.
My young sister wanted a dog of her own and our father asked me to research quality breeders of English Setters. These dogs became my foundation stock of Fantail perm. Registered kennels. Over the years I have produced 100 champions, 7 BIS winners and countless specialty winners. One of my English setters, Am Can BIS BISS Fantail’s Sunshine Man won 52 BIS, 6 US BIS and the US National along with being Top Dog All Breed in Canada. He was the result of my 3 generation BIS winners.
I did handle for a short time, but honestly my sister was so much better than I left it to her and started my path into judging. To gain knowledge in all the Sporting Group, I went to field trials, water trials, and flushing trials. From there I continued on and became a Canadian All Breed Judge.
To challenge myself further and acquire more knowledge I applied to become an AKC judge. I understand the work involved so with the help of wonderful breeders, mentors, and fellow judges I now am approved for the Sporting, Working, Non-Sporting, and Herding Groups, plus a few Toys. Also, I am on permit for Hounds.
This has changed my life and I honestly love it.

By profession I am a retired biologist. In the dog world I am a breeder of Papillons since 1979 , Bernese Mountain Dogs since 1997, and an obedience competitor since the age of 12. And since I strongly believe that every champion should also have a title at each end of his name, I am also an AKC judge of both conformation (Paps since 1990, Bernese Mountain Dogs since 1997) and obedience (since 1987). I am currently approved for 3 groups, including the Toy, Working, and Herding, Junior Showmanship, and all obedience classes. My dogs are titled in conformation, obedience and agility. In the interest of downsizing, I am now the partner of my first Australian Shepherd, so of course I am learning sheep herding.
As an exhibitor, the “dog of a lifetime” for me was my first Papillon: the first and only multiple group-winning Obedience Trial Champion toy dog in the AKC My most exciting moment was going Group 1 and HIT at the same show. My funniest moment was the day my first Bernese Mountain Dog figured out that she was way taller than me when on the A frame, and didn’t need to come down.
My judging philosophy is very simple. Each dog must have sufficient type to distinguish it from other breeds, and must be sufficiently sound to accomplish the job for which it was bred. I am above all a “form follows function” judge. In other words, I want a square, well balanced, athletic puli who could walk onto a farm and do its job!
Jeanine Dell’Orfano Winslow, ME

HereJeanine Dell’Orfano has been involved in purebred dogs for over two decades and has dedicated much of that time to the preservation and advancement of the Bergamasco Sheepdog in North America. Under the kennel name Alp Angel Bergamascos, she has bred and exhibited Bergamascos since 2005 with a strong focus on correct structure, working ability, sound temperament, and preserving the breed’s unique heritage and moderation.
She played an active role in the journey toward full AKC recognition for the breed in 2015 and served for many years as President of the Bergamasco Sheepdog Club of America. She has also been involved in judges’ education in both the United States and Canada and has judged multiple National Specialties as an AKC Open Show Judge. In Canada, she founded and helped develop the Bergamasco Shepherd Association of Canada as part of ongoing efforts toward CKC recognition.
Her dogs have earned numerous breed and group accomplishments, including multiple Westminster Kennel Club Best of Breed wins and record-setting group placements for the breed. Beyond the show ring, Jeanine is passionate about educating the public on the realities of living with rare breeds and the importance of thoughtful, preservation-focused breeding.
Before dedicating herself full-time to her dogs and breeding program, Jeanine worked for 16 years as a burn trauma ER and ICU nurse in both the United States and Canada. The experience shaped her deeply and contributed to the steady, observant, and practical approach she brings to both dogs and life.
In addition to her work with Bergamascos, she also owns and occasionally breeds Chinese Cresteds. Her life in Maine and Nova Scotia revolves around dogs, horses, music, travel, and an ongoing appreciation for craftsmanship, authenticity, and beautiful functional design.
Outside of dogs, Jeanine is also a drummer with a deep love for groove-oriented music, particularly progressive rock, jazz-influenced rock, funk, and classic pocket drumming. She is known for bringing the same analytical eye and relentless curiosity to rhythm and movement that she brings to canine structure and breed preservation.
